The goal of Independence Group is to help high risk
and at-risk young adults recover from the effects of mind changing
chemicals and reduce substance abuse-related behaviors.
Independence Group demonstrates to young adults a
simple way to live drug-free lives.
During 2004, 29% of participants who fully engaged
our services met their initial goal of sobriety for 30 continuous
days or more.
Independence Group utilizes the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) risk and protective
interactive model and a proven 12-step model.
Each service, which Independence Group engages in,
described below, has been researched and proven effective to reduce
substance abuse by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration's (SAMHSA).
- Family and individual sessions with a Licensed Chemical Dependency
Counselor, Counselor Intern or PDAP Trained Staff Member upon
request.
- Peer oriented support groups (3 times weekly) which counter
the effects of deviant norms and behaviors by creating an environment
for young adults to interact within a positive peer group
- Structured alternative activities and events
- A safe place for individuals to go and explore their potential
problems
- Educational retreats (4 times a year)
Research now confirms that interventions aimed at reducing the
risk factors and increasing the protective factors linked to substance
abuse and related problem behavior can produce immediate and long-term
positive results.
There is no waiting list, anyone can call a staff member and
schedule an appointment immediately.
Anyone can also just "show up" at our center and they will
be met by a trained staff member to begin receiving services.
All services are free of charge.
Empowering people to strive for self-sufficiency and to obtain
their optimum physical and mental well-being is an ongoing process.
Independence Group provides continuing services to anyone in
need. Our average length of service is approximately 180 days for
young adults. Because of the structure of our program, members
may return for additional booster services at any time.
Most interventions aimed at the individual are designed to change
knowledge about and attitudes toward substance abuse with the ultimate
goal of influencing behavior.
Among the risk factors for substance
abuse in the individual domain are a lack of knowledge about the
negative consequences associated with using illegal substances,
attitudes favorable toward use, early onset of use, biological
or psychological dispositions, antisocial behavior, sensation seeking,
and lack of adult supervision (Bry, 1983; Hawkins et al., 1992;
Scheier & Newcomb, 1991).
Research has shown that social and
personal skills building can enhance individual capacities, influence
attitudes, and promote behavior inconsistent with use. These interventions
usually include information about the negative effects of substance
use (Bell, Ellickson, & Harrison, 1993; Botvin, Baker, Dusenbury,
Botvin, & Diaz, 1995; Ellickson, Bell, & McGuigan, 1993; Hansen,
1996; Pentz et al., 1990; Schinke & Cole, 1995; Tobler, 1986, 1992).
