Helping a parent discover that they are an integral part of the
family dynamic and that their change will affect their child's
behavior is always a challenge. Promoting a nurturing and productive
environment where families and the community can thrive is an ongoing
process.
The effectiveness of the Liberty Group is strengthened by the
participation of "veteran" parents that attend meeting regularly,
giving back to and sharing with parents just entering the program.
As seasoned volunteers, the parents lend credibility both to the
program and to new parents.
The synergy created by the use of parents "who have been there" along
with the counselors speeds the healing process.
Because every family has been touched in some way by substance
abuse, the Liberty Group endeavors to build a healthy community
by reducing the risk factors and increasing protective factors
within the family domain.
Liberty Group's methodology to actively build healthy families and
communities by reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors
is research based and proven effective by the Center of Substance
Abuse Prevention.
Research now confirms that interventions
targeting the entire family-parents as well as children -can be
effective in preventing adolescent substance use (Dent et al.,
1995; Dishion, Andrews, Kavanagh, & Soberman, 1996; Hawkins et
al., 1992; Kumpfer et al., 1996; Pentz et al., 1989; Walter, Vaughn, & Wynder,
1989).
